Welcome to Skelly:
Skelly was one of the most popular street games in New York City from the 1950's through the early 1980's, but is rarely seen on the streets today. If one searches carefully, the remnants of spraypainted skelly courts may be found on some streets, public parks and school yards. It is said that the game has existed as long as the crown-rimmed bottle cap (circa 1910). Reference to the game has been made in the New York Times in August 1920, and again in July 1950. Jean-Michel Basquiat made several paintings in 1980 to 1982 featuring the skelly board, remembering playing the game as a child in 1960s Brooklyn. The game was played again by adults who remembered playing the game as kids in the 1998 "welcome back to Brooklyn festive." |
